Around Denwikinger-Hit Valheim has been a bit quiet lately, but the next big update is in progress. With "Hearth & Home" many innovations come into the survival game and the developers now show the first trailer with improvements for the food system.
What is? Valheim is a survival game with a varied combat system in a Viking setting that is a thick hit for the more small developer studio "Iron Gate". Apart from smaller changes of the balance or graphic details, however, little has happened since the release in February 2021. But the next big step for the game in the Early Access on Steam moves closer.
The first big update "Hearth & Home" should appear at the latest in September and now the first trailer is ready for review. The video lasts a minute and shows the revision of one of the most important mechanics in the game: the food. The English trailer on YouTube we bind you here:
Food should adapt to your needs
What innovations are to be seen? The focus is on the conversion of the food system. The friendly voice in the trailer explains that in the future you can better adapt your food buffs to your needs. Your prepared food is divided into 3 categories after the update:
- Health (red) - rather strengthens health
- Stamina (yellow) - rather strengthens the endurance
- Balanced (white) - strengthens health and stamina
So far, most foods have both - health and endurance. After the update "Hearth & Home", a fork icon on the item shows you which value is getting stronger.
As an example, the "cooked LOX meat" is to be seen, with a red fork. The hearty clubs are currently giving you 70 health and 40 stamina. After the update you get 50 health and 10 stamina. Even the powerful blood pudding can be seen - instead of 90 health and 50 stamina, give you the rich meal only 14 health and 70 stamina.
All shown foods have a lower value compared to before. If you compute the "buff points" of the cooked LOX meat, you are currently at a value of 110, which shrinks after the update to 60 points. Whether the low values are balanced by a balance adjustment or the lower values in the end mean a nerf of the food can not be said.
The food for health seems to be generally less long as endurance and balanced food. Cooked LOX meat and the "Black Soup" shown hold only 20 minutes, while the blood pudding and beet stew hold 25 minutes and the balanced food is increased to 30 minutes. However, it can not be sure to say whether it is a pattern or the foods randomly show these appropriate values.
The trailer confirms new foods: dried meat and a "black soup". In the video the dried meat can be seen as a balanced food. Boar-Jerky and Wolf-Jerky bring health and endurance to the same share. Boar brings you 20/20, Wolf brings 25 / 25. But there is no indication of how to make the durable meat.
The black soup brings 50 health and 10 stamina - just like cooked LOX meat. A good food that works like sausages on thistles for an aromatic taste.
Each of the foods shown has its own "healing" value, which is independent of the health value of the food. Cooked LOX meat brings 50 health and heals around 4 health per tick. The "Black Soup" also comes to 50 health, but heals only 3 health per tick.
The adjustments range to HUD. Instead of the long food strip, which to be seen to the left of your health, you now have a symbol of active food funding with a countdown. So you can quickly see when you are hungry again and what food needs to be read first.
Heart & Home should still start in Q3
When is "Hearth & Home"? Currently an announcement of the developers from June. So "Hearth & Home" should appear in the course of the 3rd quarter 2021. In September, the big update should hit at the latest.
What is already known about the update? The small developer studio of has already shown a lot of the new update, but there were only pictures to see so far. Among other things:
- New components for roofs and windows made of "dark wood" ("Darkwood")
- Players wish for a long time for their fields
- Extensions for the cooking station: A spice rack, a slaughter table, pots and pans
